Yesteryear
The more frequent visitors to the website will notice starting this week the introduction of a brand new section.
This new section, which is aptly named ‘Yesteryear’ will run throughout the Centenary season, and shall include match reports, articles and other such snippets from the Club’s first 100 years. Click on title to take you to Yesteryear page.
Ian Lewis has been trawling through the local newspaper archives and kicks the new section off by looking back at the Club’s founding season, bringing us a match report from the Saturday 1st October 1910 edition of the Wimbledon Borough News that is reputedly the earliest report to feature Merton Football Club.
Club historian Ian Lewis this week has delved into the local press archives to bring us a report from a Saturday in December 1958 when the Club “really went on the goal standard” with “three wins in four games” that included three Merton hat-tricks.
The report that comes from the Merton & Morden News features a number of Club legends, including Roy Applegate.
Events |
|
There have been new events added for the Centenary please click on Centenary page to see what has been organised.
Thanks to the Centenary committee for organising a great day at the clubhouse for the England match, thanks to all who took part in the 5 a side games which was well attended, great food cooked by super chef Dodge Asling.
On behalf of the club I would like to thank Tony Dunne of Pennington & Dunne Butchers for sponsoring the fantastic meat for the BBQ | Old Wilsonians 6 a side tournament Anyone interested in playing at the Annual Old Wilsonians 6 a side tournament on Sunday 8th August please let me know ASAP The Tournament is played at Hayes on their main ground where 6 pitches are laid out with 6 teams in each division for the league phase before going onto the Knockout stage. The event is well established and takes place on Sunday 8th August with a 10-30am kick off. We will look to put in as many teams as we can get organiser and players for... We need to enter as soon as possible. Teams do not have to be of any sectional strength and would be a good opportunity to introduce players to the joys of the SAL
Clubhouse
Hope you all agree the new bar and decorations look fantastic, all we have to do now is pay the bill!
Thanks to Craig Bull for sponsoring the new heaters in the bar.
We still need sponsors for the carpet tiles.
Remember this is our Centenary year hopefully with lots of visitors lets make our clubhouse nice.
Please contact Peter Kemp for more info
PLEASE DO NOT CLEAN YOUR BOOTS IN THE SHOWER This causes the showers to flood into the changing rooms. The club will be providing scrubbing brushes & buckets for use outside the changing rooms PLEASE DO NOT EAT FOOD IN THE MAIN BAR Please use the tables provided in the main hall
Parking by Pavilion
We have again had a complaint from the Council about Cars parking by the Pavilion at Joseph Hood.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you use the Car Park by the main entrance, and only drive to the Pavilion if you are delivering something to the Clubhouse (heavy Kit etc) - and then park back at the Car Park afterwards.
The Council have threatened us with replacing the lock on the swing gate and not providing us with a key. This will have serious repercussions to the Bar deliveries etc. and one we must avoid at all costs. We will ask all Club officials to challenge anyone that drives down to the Pavilion.
I appreciate that we are not the only culprits and the Committee has raised this fact with the Council to ensure we do not get the blame for other Park Users indiscretions.
Thanks
The Committee
GROUNDHOPPERS Link above will take you to report from person who goes around looking at local football teams grounds, Merton FC has been reviewed
Policies
Merton Football Club Selection Policy
Southern Amateur League rule 8(I)(i) states that “in all matches in which it competes, each Club shall play its strongest team in its 1st XI, its second strongest team in its 2nd XI and so on” and rule 8(I)(iii) states that “clubs are expected to hold regular selection meetings or a comparable electronic selection programme to select sides of relative sectional strength”. It is these rules, as well as the aim that teams are selected on merit and that all players are members of Merton Football Club and should be available for selection for any team that informs the selection policy of Merton Football Club. Selection of squads Aim – all squads to be selected on the basis of SAL rule 8(I)(i), with availability confirmed and e-mailed to fixtures secretary by 5pm on each Tuesday where matches are due to be played on a proceeding Saturday.
Process • Each Saturday at the game, all managers / captains to check availability of each of the players present for the proceeding weekend’s fixture. • By Sunday evening, 1st XI squad to be selected and sent to fixtures secretary • By Monday evening, 2nd XI and 3rd XI squads to be selected and sent to fixtures secretary • By Tuesday 5pm, 4th XI, 5th XI and 6th XI squads to be selected and sent to fixtures secretary
In co-ordinating the squad selection process, team managers are expected to communicate to the manager of the team beneath them - the players they have selected, those not selected and those unavailable. Movement of players between squads Initial squad selection - If a player was originally named in a squad for a match and is selected in a lower squad for the subsequent weekend, he will be guaranteed to start. In the event of a player being selected in a higher squad than the one he was named in for the previous weekend, there can be no automatic expectation that the player will start. After initial squad selection – a late call up to a higher team for a player that was due to start for a lower team will guarantee a start for that player in the higher team (unless it is mutually agreed that he will be sub) and where the call up of a sub from a lower team occurs there is no expectation that the player must start for the higher team. After a late call up, the minimum a player can expect for the subsequent weekend is to be retained in the squad he was originally named in (from the weekend before) and will start if the original intention was to start him. Players returning from periods of unavailability To promote the aim that players will be selected on merit, any players return from availability will not be guaranteed selection in the squad they were last selected for and they will be entered into the pool of players available for selection. Communications Managers can choose whatever methods they deem necessary to communicate with other managers but they should be mindful that communications should be restricted to only those that need to know. This is to protect the work life balance of all those who volunteer their time to help run Merton Football Club. Where players are selected in a different squad from the week before, each manager should carefully consider how they communicate this change to the affected player and explain reasons for the decision. A selection meeting will take place each month to review the effectiveness of the selection policy. |

Coaching Disabled Footballers
Congratulations to Ian Lewis who has recently gained the Football Association Coaching Disabled Footballers Certificate. The Coaching Disabled Footballers course is designed to give football coaches ideas and practices for the inclusion of disabled players in football sessions within mainstream or impairment specific sessions. Ian attended the course run by the Surrey County FA last month at the Croygas Sports Club in Wallington and commented; ‘’I found the course not only extremely beneficial but also very enjoyable and rewarding, extending as it does my existing coaching skills and experience. More importantly though, the knowledge I have gained will allow me to better plan future coaching sessions to include disabled players’’. Details of FA nationally accredited courses for 2010 can be found on the AFA and the SCFA websites. Simply click-on the respective ‘Development’ pages and follow the links to the ‘Courses’ section. There is a wide range of courses available including Coaching, Medical, Emergency Aid, Safeguarding Children and Refereeing. Enrolment for applicants couldn’t be easier, as both the aforementioned websites now include a user friendly Online Booking facility. Further information if required is available by contacting Bob Leeds at the AFA or Craig Hicks at the SCFA.
Are you, or anyone you know, interested in becoming a Referee? We are offering access and will sponser anyone willing to attend a local basic Referee course (normal price £85). The course is being held at Carshalton Football Club, Beddington Park, Church Road, Beddington, Surrey, SM6 7NN. The nearest mainline railway stations are Hackbridge (15 minute walk through the park) and Wallington (30 minute walk away). Trains run to both Hackbridge and Wallington from Victoria mainline station. There are also trains to Hackbridge from Blackfriars station and to Wallington from London Bridge station. . There are parking facilities for people travelling by car. The course includes practical outdoor demonstrations which will take place on the Club playing field. The initial course modules, 1, 2 and 3 begin on a Tuesday evening, continue over the following two Sundays (all day) and finish with the examinations on the following Tuesday evening. Successful candidates then go on to do their initial 6 matches as a trainee referee. Great North Run
I’m going to be doing the great North run for Cancer Research in September and was hoping you might help make all the unnecessary amount of running worthwhile and sponsor me. It’s been hard work pounding the pavements over the last few months. So much so I’ve been injured for most of it and had to sit in a pub instead so it’s not going to be easy on the day. That being said I’m confident of getting round in one piece so any donations are much appreciated. Donation site is below. Sorry about the Photo big Sis (you’ll have to sponsor me to understand that statement) http://www.runningsponsorme.org/kevinwood2 Cheers all Kevin Wood
Three Peaks We are getting in touch to let you know that in early August, we will be attempting the 3 peaks challenge. If you're not familiar with this, there's more info on the link at the bottom of this email, but in a nutshell it means we will be climbing 10,000ft, walking 25 miles and travelling 450 miles throughout England, Scotland and Wales - all within in 24 hours! The main reason for doing this is to raise as much money as possible for Evelina Children's Hospital, a specialist part of Guy's & St Thomas'. A family friend of Pete Jennings has a child who was treated there, so it's a very personal cause for me. For more info, and if you would like to make a donation, please check out the attached link. If you can help in any way I'd be most grateful! Cheers! Pete Jennings, Paul Ellis and Paul Welch www.virginmoneygiving.com/jenningspete
Bill Stapleton - SAL President It is with much sadness that my first correspondence to you as SAL Hon Sec is to advise you of the sad passing of our former President Bill Stapleton. Bill had served the SAL and the AFA as his own club, originally Borough Polytechnic - now South Bank Cuaco - for many years. Bill had been suffering detoriorating health in recent times and our thoughts are with his family at this time. The funeral service will take place at 3pm on Friday 30th July at the Beckenham Crematorium, Elmers End Road, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 4TD and thereafter at the Bromley Court Hotel, Bromley Hill. The family have requested no flowers however donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society and will be most welcome. Please can you cascade this message within your clubs, especially to the older generation who would have known Bill.

Travel Alerts
Courtesy of the AFA website we are advised that a series of major road works has commenced around the North Circular Road, which are programmed for completion in 2012. When travelling to fixtures in and around the area, Club members and officials are asked to check the latest traffic news, make suitable allowance for additional journey time, and perhaps seek an alternative route. |
