First Friendly of the Season - Sunday 15th August 2010 Merton 9 – London United 1
Merton WFC got off to a cracking start with their first pre-season friendly this Sunday at home. There were 16 players available to play due to a very successful marketing and recruitment campaign by Julia Buckingham. The team’s new head coach Rob played a tactical game of role-on role-off substitutions. This enabled him to see the best position for some of the new players, as well as experienced players to try something new. Rob was ably assisted by assistant coach Bryn who ran the line, son of established player Sue Puddephatt. Muffy Morrison scored with style within 10 minutes, swiftly followed by goals from Carla Winter and Anna Larsson. With cheers from the sidelines and the pitch, Merton finished the 1st half 6 – 1 up. Experienced goalkeeper Pina Napolitano had a relatively easy ride due to the skillful defending of some founder members, Sue Robinson, Jenny Burr and Sue P, along with some great new players in the form of Jemma Gore and Corina Kettner. There was strong midfield play with the debut of Cherry McKenzie-Campbell and Megan Estorninho. The 2nd half continued in Merton’s favour with 3 more goals, ending the 1st friendly 9 – 1 at full time. Goal scorers were Muffy Morrison (4), Carla Winter (3) and Anna Larsson (2). Our thanks to all the girls who played and supported today! Long may it continue. Sue Robinson Pina Napolitano.
