Youth section U9s lost 4-0 in a friendly against Carshalton Athletic from a higher division. Good game and our lads played well. In the big game of the day, our U11s win 3-0 away at Bedfont Eagles and move into Cup Semis. Great stuff lads!
U13s game cancelled due to oppo not having enough players available to play.
U14s won 10-1 against Met Police Reds
U15s had no fixture today.

When news streamed in that Ram was hanging up his boots as editor of the Merton Way, an ever-swelling readership shivered at the prospect of losing their Friday weekly reading treat. How on earth would the Merton faithful now occupy themselves whilst consuming their afternoon coffee and bagel?

But, after a hiatus of just a solitary week, up stepped young Sam Singer-Ripley to the plate, and as you can see from his first edition of the newsletter, the baton has been passed to a very capable pair of hands, and the Merton Way dream lives on in fine fettle.

We thank Sam hugely for taking on this role, and giving of his time. A club like ours can only thrive through the enthusiasm and support of volunteers, and we are grateful to have true Merton men like Sam on board. But with a few important committee positions set to open up over the summer, we need more of you guys to follow Sam’s lead, and ensure seamless transitions across the board so that our club can continue to go from strength to strength.

So, as we welcome our new editor, we also extend a call to arms to the inner passion we know you have for the mighty Yellow. You can help – so please don’t be shy to come forward!

Today’s results were pretty mixed, but the 1s led the way, getting back on the horse with an excellent 2-1 win over Ibis. Tilley and Elz with the goals after going 1-0 down. 2s had a day to forget, going down 4-0 with Sherbs MoM…Brilliant stuff from the 3s, who had an excellent 2-0 win at Old Wilsonians. The 4s put in an inspired display, going down 2-1 to table-topping Carshalton. A few chances went abegging, but a good performance. The 5s pulled off a comprehensive 5-0 win over HSBC, with Andy Bitmead smashing a hat trick. The 6s went down 7-2 to a strong Old Sutts team in the Cup. No game for the 7s this week. Well done all round chaps!

Today’s results (very belated).

The 1s unfortunately went down 2-1 in a ‘spicy’ cup game against Old Thorntonians. 2s pulled off a good 2-1 win, with goals from Jase Thomas and Andy Holder Ross. 3s went down 4-2 on one of the dodgy WCE pitches, while the 4s went down by the same score line on another. 5s, 6s and 7s games all called off on account of frozen pitches, and/or oppo failing to gather a team. Perhaps not the best set of results, but once again a good turnout at the Hood for apres footy.

Two result today for the youth teams. The Under 9s beat Claygate Royal Swans 2 – 0 and our U14s bowed out of the County Cup beaten 5-0 by Sutton United in their stadium . This was a terrific performance and cup run from our lads with Sutton 62 places above them in the Surrey Youth League. Great performance and well done to the lads and the proud coaches Darrius and Ben!!!!

The remedial pitch work at the Hood was all worthwhile as the 1s continued their good run and beat HSBC 5-1 in the SAL Cup to progress to the quarter finals. (Scorers- Woody on video/Johnny/Vanny/Tom R/Milo) at WCE 3s lost again by the odd goal 2-1 to Old Owens but came back to Hood for drink and Pizza. 7s won 7-1 against Old Salesians. Well done to their management team who came back to the Hood.

A new-look Hood!

For those who you who have popped down to the Hood since the dawn of the New Year, you will have noticed it’s had a pretty significant series of improvements. On behalf of the entire club, we’d just like to say a huge thank you to Darren Fitzgerald, who so selflessly gave of his time over the holidays, and single-handedly did all the painting and repairs that have given our beloved clubhouse the facelift it so badly needed.

For those of you who don’t know, Darren is one of our newer members who plays for the 3s. But he has also taken on the role of managing the U/15s, in conjunction with Daniel Woollard, and the duo have done a fantastic job so far this season. We thank Darren kindly for all he is doing to help the club, and we hope you enjoy making use of the much-improved facilities at the Hood as a direct result of his efforts.
